Questions to Ask a Therapist

How do you know if a therapist is a right fit for you?

Here are some questions for you to ask when first meeting a therapist:

  1. What are your credentials?
  2. How do you work with other professionals, such as psychiatrists and physicians?
  3. What experience do you have with my problem area?
  4. How are parents and significant others included in treatment?
  5. What are your policies regarding billing, insurance, and sliding scale?

Assess your comfort level in the office and your connection with the therapist. If you don't feel comfortable, therapy will likely not be helpful for you with that therapist and/or in that setting.

Here are our answers to these questions:

  1. Our Credentials: Millie M. Riss earned her doctorate in clinical psychology (PsyD), and she is a licensed professional counselor (LPC). Courtney Morton earned her Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) with an emphasis on clinical social work, and she is a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW).
  2. Greenleaf's Team Approach: We highly value the input of other professionals and believe in coordinating treatment on a regular basis to ensure the highest and most efficient quality of care.
  3. Our Experience: Dr. Riss and Courtney have a variety of experience in the mental health field, including treating such problem areas as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, teen depression, and family planning related to infertility and adoption. Please see our bios for more information
  4. Support Systems: We strongly believe that parents and significant others play an important role in our clients' treatment. Clients learn skills in therapy, but they begin to put them to good use at home, thus making it important that everyone is working towards the same goal.
  5. Finances: Greenleaf provides insurance-ready reimbursement statements for you to submit to your provider. Greenleaf has a scholarship fund to offer services to the community. Please contact us to talk about billing options.
